Musical surprises

Music, like movies stories, poetry, and even jokes all use tension-building and surprise to engage and move us. We ask what sort of musical organization at the pitch (scales, chords, melodies) and temporal (beat, meter, rhythmic patterns) levels surprise listeners and evoke an emotional rewarding effect? What are the brain signals that reflect these surprises? And which brain systems are activated in response to them?
